It has costed us more than 50 years of development to reach a level near to similiar countries like Italy. We were not the most rich country but the war and the economic politics of the first years of the dictatorship destroyed most of spanish economy. In the socioeconomic part it was a debacle. Even most people are not very religious the Church still have plenty of benefits and there are a lot of schools managed by them. It also affected the power of the Catholic church in the society. For example, the terrorist group ETA was born during the dictatorship. It's also a thing that was born many years before, but the represion of that years made it worst. In a similar way, it also radicalized the local nationalism of the Basque Country and Catalonia. Also the political parties have no shame in making agreements with fascist parties. So you can see people with fascist symbols on the street walking as it's nothing bad happens. It's easy to hear opinions like "with Franco we lived better" in the street without shame. So the fascism has not very bad propaganda, for a lot of people it's seen as another political view. Nowadays the polarization is more similar to other countries, with the rise of rightwing populist parties and very socialist left wing parties.Ī very bad effect related to this is that in Spain the fascists -yes, Franco was very related to fascism, even a lot of people still don't want to believe it- never lost the war and were judged. Since the great movilizations of 2011 (known in Spain as 15m) the political ground moved a bit allowing other parties to be born. The situation was very dual: left-wing or right-wing, with plenty of hate for the other part. The impact is so big it's not easy to sum up in one post - but i'll try.įirst of all, the polarization of people based in their political views, even it started years before the war, it only made it worst.
